Hi! What is "fuel evaporative controls"
my car just failed the smog test in california.
And how do i fix it?

thats the charcoal cannister thats under the hood (probably on the left side, half under the battery) and associated plumbing, it goes to the gas tank vents, and also is connected to the intake manifold with a purge valve which is controlled by engine vacuum. the idea is any gas fumes from the tank when parked are absorbed by the charcoal cannister, then when the engine is running, it sucks the fumes out of the charcoal. you probably need to inspect those vent lines, or replace them if they are cracking

also, your gas cap has to seal properly, or it will fail these tests. actually, thats a common failure mode... make sure there are no dents or deep knicks in the fuel filler pipe surface that the gas cap gasket presses against, and make sure that gasket is in good shape and not cracked.
