1994 940 Transmission Fluid
I recently bought a 1994 940 non-turbo automatic sedan. It is up there at 263k and still kicking. Engine was rebuilt at 193k and the previous owner attempted to take good care of it the past 5 years he owned it, lots of records. Something I can't find though is really any information about the transmission. The best I can come up with was that in 1995 it was serviced for a reverse problem, in 2000, the transpan gasket, pinion seal, and rear gasket were replaced, 2002 new bushings were installed. There is nothing to indicate that this is other than the original transmission.
That being said, I have some questions about preventative maintenence on it. As best I can tell, the fluid was switched out twice in the 5 years the last owner had it. There is no information from before this time. Right now, there is no serious problem with the transmission. It shifts consistently in the same rpm range every time. The transition between 1st and 2nd gear is a bit rough, but nothing like I read of rough shifting where people thought they were being hit or jumped a pothole. Just mildy clunky and annoying if you are paying attention to it. Other gears, no real problem at the moment. The gearshift can be a little loose. No leaks, normal levels. The fluid is a light clear brown with a very vauge redisual reddish tinge, smell is normal. I am thinking it is time to switch it out anyway and the best I can tell, the filter hasn't been changed in 5 years. However, I am not sure what I should take for a transmission its age, non-synth or synth fluid? I am not sure what was thrown in there before.
Any advice would be nice!
