I am searching for a replacement engine for my beloved 1994 2.3 Volvo 940 Polar and would like some advice on what engines are compatible.

the engine block and head and stuff from any 940 2.3 should be directly compatible. non-turbo if your polar is non-turbo. you could probably adapt a 240 or 740 non-turbo 2.3L, too (the 240 has a side mount distributor, so you'd need to cap that off, and use your 940's rear-of-the-head distributor after removing the plug/cap from the 240 motor).

saying 'polar', I'm guessing you're not in the USA, as I don't believe that name was ever used here.... Please, add your general location to your profile or mention it in your posts, as there's a fair number of little differences in different country versions of these cars.
