Default 1996 940 LPT Estate

Hi,

I am new to the forum, and would appreciate any ideas or advice please.

I have a much loved Volvo 940, 182,000 miles, totally reliable for five years.

I have never been able to rev it beyond 4,500 revs. It now takes about 10 miles from cold to settle from 2,000 revs to down to a steady ish tickover of around 800 revs. Has anyone any idea where to start please? I don't have a diagnostic tuner. Also the tickover is lumpy, and it doesn't like starting more than a couple of times in succession. Fitted new spark plugs 2 years ago.

The bodywork is in good condition for it's age, the engine is quiet, and has been reliable up to now. It's at that point where I don't know whether to stick with the car, or sell it and buy another 940 with less faults.

Thanks,

Paul

which engine, fuel injection, ignition system does that have? they sold no 1996 940's here in the States, the 95's were the last year.

LPT as in low pressure turbo? Is that the B230FT or B230ET or what? (should be printed on a sticker on the timing cover). not being able to rev is often a issue with bad vacuum lines or loose or split pressure side air hose fittings

Hi Pierce,

Thanks for your reply.

The engine is a B230FT. It's a 940 Light Presure Turbo. Bosch EZ 116K ignition,Bosch LH2.4 Jetronic fuel injection(sorry about my lack of knowledge of the American Market models!)

ok, thats the same engine and stuff as the 92-95 940 turbos sold here.

now, does it have the diagnostic block on the left (US driver side) strut tower under the hood? this is a black rectangular block somewhat close to the power steering reservoir, and if you lift the cover has like 8 numbered holes, 1-8, and a little wire plug, there's a pushbutton and an LED. in the US, 1996+ models of ALL cars did away with self diagnostics and switched to OBD-II for which you need a code reader, but up to 1995 the LH2.4 B230F(T) engines had these diag blocks.

if its got that diag thing, see Engine and OBD Diagnostic Codes for instructions on how to read any engine fault codes. be sure to read codes in both position 2 (fuel injection) and 6 (ignition).

these codes aren't the be all and end all of diagnostics, but they can help point in the right direction when intelligently interpreted...
