Hi: After years of sitting on the fence about forums I decided to jump on board and really try to learn about Volvo repairs.

Currently my 1980 volvo sedan 244GL is having a transmission meltdown. what i can't figure out is what transmission goes into it. I read conflicting things and can't seem to find a definitive answer: AW70? BW35? BW55? AW55?

It is somewhat confusing. Are there some tranny models that will fit and some that won't. What is the difference between these models (briefly) or where can i look it up online.

Can you see a serial number on the trans itself? Should be an ID plate near the driver's side towards the back of the trans.
