Default 244GL Air Intake

hey guys

My old mans 244GL is runing like crap. i took a look under the hood, and was quite confused when i saw a pipe going from the air box to the exhaust . The mechanic he goes to claimed its there to cool down the exhuast, but it looks to me that its sucking air from the exhuast...

being a car made in sweeden sorta makes sense.

My Question

can i rip this pipe out and either plug up the hole in the airbox, or run piping down to behind the front bar and have dual CAI?

anyone done this/got pics?
Cheers!

Sounds like it is the preheater pipe for cold climates.

It certainly is and it doesn't cool the exhaust it heats the air before it reachesthe filter element. However, inside the filter box there should be a preheating thermostat and shutter. If the air temp is high the stat should close the shutter and allow air to enter only by the other inlet pipe.

In many cases the stat jams over the years, sometimes with the shutter open and sometimes closed. If it ispermanently open it will affect the running of the car at normal running temp. In cold climates if it is permanently closed it will affect the running on first start up.

Check the shutter is closed when the engine is at normal running temp. If it is not thatcould be your problem.
