I'm having an acceleration problem too- My 1990 240 baby runs perfectly but two days ago it lost its ability to accelerate. Would it still be drivable if the throttle cable is the problem?

I would be very happy if it was only that. I have a mechanic who has worked on the car for years, but he is not a Volvo specialist. With no AC, lots of dents, etc, the car is not worth a ton of trouble shooting by him replacing parts that could be suspect.

That year car will have OBD1 with a code box. Check the codes and see if it a problem
if you open the hood, you will be able to see if the throttle cable is broken. it will be obvious if it is not.

not much info to go on. others can respond...

 

Damaged cable would certainly cause problems but it's easy to examine--it's a just a cable that should have some tension, respond with the pedal action. Of course, it could be a ton of other things; I'd start with a good "tune up".

 

I can't thank you enough for taking the trouble to respond to my pathetic question. It turned out the the rug was under the accelerator!

I was disappointed that my car was not working, and I didn't think I would be able to fix it, so I was looking for another 240 to replace it. They are hard to find!

I hope I can keep mine another 10 years even though it looks like hell.
