240 back up lights
Where is the back-up light switch on a '91 240 sedan A/T? The online repair manual says it is at the base of the shift lever. Chilton's says if is found on the left side of the gear shift selector, then it gets wierd:
1. Remove the ashtray and panel in the center console
2. Remove the faceplate with gear position symblols
3. Remove the start inhibitor/reverse light switch. Open the connector and lift off the switch.
Then, when giving instructions on installation, there is a note to "don't forget the prism which fits onto the new switch"......What????
Questions:
- Why remove the center console?
- The start inhibitor wire are soldered. How do you "Open the connector"?
- Is there another switch somewhere? When I look up back up light switch on the internet I see a part that looks completely different thant he start inhibitor switch.
- What prism?
Thanks for any help.

The reverse lights are worked off of a funny looking thing mounted on the side of the shifter. Once you remove the cover for the shifter there is 2 phillips screws holding the indicator on to the peice. It should be brown and you should see a slider looking thing. That is the peice that needs to be replaced.
If you can post a pick of the parts you find and I will tell you if it is correct.
