Default 240 series tranny interchange question

I have a nice rebuilt early 80's 240 3 speed automatic tranny still in a complete parts car. Can that tranny be put in a late 88 to 92 240 series car. I have mounts, shafts, etc. to match parts. Not worried about losing od feature of newer trannies.

The 89-92 240's had an opening for the crank position sensor and a notched flywheel, the earlier ones did not.

If I stay 88 or older should I be ok? What is the crank sensor for?
