I just went to try to get the codes and had the following problem:

I have tried to get the codes, but it's not working. I have plugged it into socket 2 and turned the ignition to KP II and pushed the button for a couple of seconds and the light does not come on at all. I have tried different sockets and done this over and over and the light has never come on once. Any ideas?

Fat chance the LED is burnt out, but possible. In this case, you have to go to the ECU to retrieve the codes, I believe.

Something not right here and I'm thinking it is operator error. Find a local Volvo mechanic and take it to them so they can read the codes. They should do it for free and give you an idea where the problem is. Other then that it is a waste of time trying to find the problem here.
