240 wagon make whirring sound on acceleration

240 wagon make whirring sound on acceleration
My 91 volvo 240 wagon with 218,000 miles has started to make a whirring noise on acceleration and deceleration. I can't tell from the drivers seat if it is coming from the front or the back or just below me. It does not sound like tire wear or stereo feedback. I am thinking it might be the differential or transmisson. How can I troubleshoot? Thanks
