Default Troubleshooting expertise needed: whirring sound in engine

Hello. I have a 2006 s60 AWD with about 50,000 miles on it. It's developed an engine noise that sounds like a loud whirring noise like something is spinning loudly. When I start the engine the sound ramps up louder and louder and when I turn the engine off, it slows down and gets quieter in about 30 seconds after the car is off.

--If I rev the engine in neutral, the sound doesn't change
--The sound doesn't appear to change as I accelerate when I'm driving eitner so basically the noise at idle is how it sounds with no variance

If I check under the hood, the sound seems to be coming directly from the engine or very near the engine.

Any thoughts as to what this might be?

Thanks!

Default radiator fan

Hello. I just took the car to the Shell station and the mechanic thought it was the radiator fan about to go. (maybe a bearing or something was making the noise)

Does this makes sense?

Also, how difficult is it to replace the radiator fan? Anyone know where I could get the instructions. (I don't have a lot of experience but this seems like it could be a reasonably easy installation)

Default volvo dealership

I called the Volvo dealership and they said they didn't think it was the radiator fan. Anyone know how they would go about troubleshooting this?

I've found some other mention of a jet-engine sort of sound that is most noticeable at start up and when you shut the engine down. I haven't found a fix yet.

I believe my S60 does that too. I assumed it was the fan. It sounds jet-like but nothing too unusual. You might want to take a trip to the Volvo dealership and have a tech listen, even if there was no CEL they might be able to find something. Lastly, I have had my Volvo serviced a few times already (as in oil and filter when I'm too lazy to do it myself) and they never noted anything out of the ordinary regarding the fan noise.

Interesting, I just asked the same question of the board last night, not noticing this thread. It definitely is the fan winding up, I'll follow this thread to see if anyone has a fix.

I had a question for the OP. Does your fan go on while or after using the A.C.? I'm wondering if Volvo fan's have a high/low function.

Default more information

Turning the air conditioner on or off does nothing to change the sound.

Default temp sensor?

That's an interesting thing about the temp sensor. One thing I noticed also was when I open the hood I can feel a lot of air moving from the fan. Normally, I never remember that much air moving.

It sort of makes sense if the temp sensor is broken and it thinks the engine is too hot and revs the fan up to crazy speeds...hence the loud noise.

Default temp sensor fix

I went to the gas station and had them scan the computer and sure enough the temp sensor is not working.

I haven't asked them how much it would cost. Is this a simple job I could do myself? Can anyone tell me how involved it is?

Thanks.

Okay, with my car exhibiting the same symptoms. I took a look at the heat sender. Popped the connector off pushed it back on and Voila. Started car, problem solved

I am having the same issue with my 05 S60 2.5T. Sounds like a jet taking off when I start the car then again when I turn it off. It seems to be more prevalent on hot days. Is this really normal or should I look at replacing the thermostat? BTW...where is the "heat sender" located?

Thanks.

My issue was resolved. It turned out the engine thermostat was broken. When I started the car, I could tell becaue the temperature gauge didn't move. The radiator fan then spun too fast thinking the engine was overheating. Once I had the thermostat fixed, the problem was resolved. The fan didn't have to be replaced.

My thermostat gauge is working fine so maybe it's not the thermostat itself.

I t is very likely the "water temperature sender". In my case it was just a poor connector. I would try unplugging the connector once before I spent money on parts. The Sender is on the front of the block, very near the top, belt side. I'm no mechanic, so I just ID'd the sender from a picture provided by an on-line parts store.

Boy did this thread take a load off my mind regarind my 1998 V70. The same thing just popped up on my car just as the weather here in the Antelope Valley area of CA got into consistent triple digits. I was about ready to replace the car and am relieved that it's something relatively simple.
