Default 240 wagon tailgate hinge failure - options?

Hi,

My 240 wagon tailgate hinge failed and the other is not far behind.

I need to source replacements and I need shipping to Australia.

Can you guys please point me in the right direction?

Dave

The three main places I go for Volvo parts is Tasca parts, FCP euro, and IPD. Tasca is a Volvo dealer so they have the largest variety of original parts and no aftermarket, FCP euro has a large variety of aftermarket but they also have some original Volvo parts, IPD has performance parts and parts for older models but they also have a mix of aftermarket and original. They are all good and reputable. You would have to contact them and ask if they ship to Australia. IPD probably will, they are under new ownership and their main goal is to improve shipping (speed and cost).

Ebay has a good selection of vendors, new and used. Some will ship overseas.

part numbers vary by year. 1986-1991 240 wagons, the left hing is 1315550, the right hinge is 1315551. thats part [2] on this drawing...

Volvo Tailgate components. 5-Door 1986-

FYI

Discontinued item. EBay has them but these are expensive.

I will have a look locally a little more before I buy internationally.

probably best bet is at a wreckers. same part fits all 86-91 240 wagons aka 245. for that matter, probably fits 1986+ 265's too (unless 260's were discontinued by 86, I forget).

now, if your volvo is older or newer than that, you're looking for a different PN.

Tasca shows it as a discontinued part but FCP euro has them.

a lot of dealer sites won't show it as discontinued until you try and order one from them and they find out from the mothership they are NLA, *and* they bother to update their site.

Mine failed on me the other day, the bolt in the hatch stripped out. I found replacements for $30 here in Austin TX used. What I did however it I drilled out the stripped threads and tapped it with a 10mm bolt with the same 1.50 thread spacing

the old bolt was 8mm x 1/1.50
the new bolt is 10mm x 1/1.50

the tap, bolts and washers cost me about $10 and I did both sides while I was at it, add some thread lock and its stronger than original.

On my 93 Volvo 240 wagon. My tailgate bolt also stripped, but there’s also a metal “thing” that appears to have snapped. So will reboring the bolt holes and replacing bolts be enough to hold the heavy *** tailgate?
Thank you

Depends, post a photo of the damage. If it’s too bad you may need a new hinge.

hi Nichals, thank you for your reply here are some photos

I may have a line on a set of wrecking yard hinges which I’m guessing would be the best scenario but just in case it’s good for all options to be pursued

that part prevents the hinge from cantilevering out. In my opinion, without that second bolt, the threads would eventually tear out, likely when closing the hatch. Perhaps not at first, but late on a rainy night, when you are hungry and have to get to work early. Ask me how I know…lol. I would go for a wrecking yard replacement.
