245 rear seat release handle mechanism
I am trying to repair/rebuild the seat release handle on my new-to-me 1990 245...seems the PO simply used pliers on the cables or a screwdriver on the latches to release the seat, but I was hoping to clean it up a bit. I picked up a good handle mechanism from a 940 that is the right color and not broken, but I am still missing some of the white plastic internal parts I think...anyone have or can point to either photos or an exploded view of how this release handle is supposed to be put together?
Thanks in advance

240 and 740/940 wagon rear seats are considerably different. not sure any parts are interchangable.
here's the parts diagram for the 240...
Rear seat 5-Door. Fits: Volvo | VolvoPartsWebstore.com
the 7/9's have a split seat, single on the right, double on the left.
here's the 7/9 (up to 1992) right rear seat
Rear seat Right 5-Door -1992. Fits: Volvo | VolvoPartsWebstore.com
and left...
Rear seat Left 5-Door -1992. Fits: Volvo | VolvoPartsWebstore.com
(1993- are somewhat more complex)
So... are you talking about the seat bottom release, or the seat back release?

well, match the PN's of the bits between that 240 and 940 page. they appear completely different to me.
note thats a Volvo dealer's website, if they list the parts, they are still available for the 240 from a dealer. this dealer website has about 30% off (+/-) MSRP.

Thanks...from what I gather (including mining an 88 245 in a salvage yard), the handle changed in 89. Most vendors seem to list only the 89-93 type and the photos look exactly like the one I pulled from a 945....but what is different is the interface with the two release cables, so that is what I'm looking for a view of. I think I've figured out how I can make what I have work (reliably and without cosmetic hacking), but I think I'm still missing part of the correct cable interface and it looks like the replacement handles do not include it. I was not able to get a clear detail of the configuration on that exploded view and it seemed like it was showing the older style seat. Anyway, I am sure. I'm missing something silly here and thanks for the feedback

i found that diagram using the part numbers for a 1990 240.
part 32 on this diagram is the control handle for 1989- ... part 34 is a spring nut for 89- 33 is the cable anchorage. 35 and 32 appear to be key bits, too.
Rear seat 5-Door. Fits: Volvo | VolvoPartsWebstore.com
all the part numbers and prices are down below.

Hey - just to close the loop on this, here's what I found: the 945 seat handle plastic assembly does, in fact, work in the 245 (at least on my 1990 245). the 945 makes for a good parts offering as the split seat means there are two handle mechanisms in each car you find! Also, you can easily find a tan interior so you are not stuck with the new, black handle. That said, I was lucky in that I found car in a local salvage yard that had clearly been indoors a good bit of its life and thus the plastic was not powdery like a lot of aged Volvo plastic becomes.
So, the handle on the 945 appears to be the same in design as the 245 for this later series rear seat. I tried using the 2 lever style that may have been used in earlier 245s and had no luck, but using the cable bracing that is original to my later 245 I was able to use the 945 handle and the only part missing was the attachment from the handle to the inner cable end. I used a 1" (or so) washer in which I drilled 2 holes to draw the cable through...seems to work quite well....so, it's a bit Franken-built & a bit re-engineered, but cleaner than exposed cables and vice grips or a long screwdriver on the latches. If anyone else is in this situation, I can provide some elaboration....sorry, but I did not take a photograph of the Frankenmechnism...
