I've looked all over for any discussions on the upper spring seat(cushion) for 740/940/960 front suspensions, and found nothing. If you look up any part supplier for these cars(IPD, FCP, E Euro, etc) they all list the same part number. Which makes sense since it's basically the same chassis - from the late 80's to the late 90's - and they all use the same strut mount and the mounting holes in the engine compartment for the strut mount are in the same location. But I finally noticed some big changes over that time. I collected some seats from the local Pick-n-Pull and put them side by side in a photo to show the differences. The early 740's had the 2 seats on the left. They both seem flat(meaning the top and bottom surfaces are parallel). The only difference being their thickness But if you look at the one on the right, which the later 940's and 960's had, you'll see it has quite a bit of taper to it, which makes a big difference in the angle of the coil spring when it's pressed into the strut mount. Obviously the springs have changed also over the years but the top coil of the spring has not and any spring from any year will fit into all 3 of these seats. Does anyone have any idea what Volvo was trying to do?
