I have a 1987 740 turbo wagon that will shift fine up to second, but there it stays. Are there issues other than a bad transmission that I could be looking into? The turbo did stop working about a year ago. thanks for considering this.

 

If the fluid is not too low, then the tranny needs internal help...

 

yea fluid is good. Replaced it and the filter and tried a can of "treatment" recommended by the local transmission guy with no results. I can try to score a used transmission, but didn't want to jump the gun on that job. Thanks

 

Was the old fluid burned and/or discolored? Can you not get it to shift into 3rd at all? Not by accelerating briskly and take pressure off the gas pedal? Not by manually shifting? If not, it's fubar'd. If/when you search for a replacement, be sure you get an AW71 or AW71L from a turbo. The standard AW70 will not stand the additional torque of a turbo. I say this from experience; I blew an AW70 w/ 125k on it in less than 2 weeks behind a turbo motor.
