Replacing the part that goes out - the electrical part - isn't all that bad. I think I popped the cluster out on my 240 to make it easier to access; I forget what I did on the 740, but I have successfully removed switches from both models at the wreck yard in less than half an hour. Replacing the lock assembly is a PITA, but that's not gonna be your problem. The link in your last post is for the locking part, which is not what you would need.

I had a similar problem with a few of my 960's. The deal with it was that the key did not return to the II position after I released it from start. What I did was turned the key back just a little after each start. This solved several problems and I drove the car like that for a couple of years. I actually looked at it as a security feature.
