I have a 86 740 manual with the electric push button 5th. 5th is sporadic at best and will only work when the dash "5" lights up. Do I have a button problem or is there something else going on. Any help would be appreciated.

You most likely have a wiring problem. Look into that, under the shifter, make sure it's in order...
