Questions an owner's manual would answer, but a Bentley manual doesn't
As the title eludes to, I have a Bentley for my '85 245 but no owner's manual. Because of this I'm flying blind. Could someone tell me:
1. Should the ignition/door key also lock/unlock the security cover behind the rear seat? I can't get my key in. Before I take it apart it would be nice to know the key should work.
2. Is there a delay setting for the rear wiper? I have on and off, but there is a third position that doesn't seem to do anything.
Thanks,
Jim

1: The owners (master) key should be able to open everything. Someone might have changed the lock. I had a similar problem with my car...it turned out that someone replaced the lock for the glove box and I had to get a whole new set of keys.
2: I believe it should be on/ off/ fast mode.

Copy. I have a broken wire sticking out of the passenger side hinge on the tailgate. I assumed it was for the defogger, which isn't working right now as well. The plan is to splice it back together the next time I have some free time and (relatively) warm weather. Perhaps that will fix the wiper issue instead, leaving me to break out the DVOM to solve the defroster. Or the other way around.

The wiring for the defogger, third brake light, and license plate light are on the left (driver's) side.
The wiring for the wiper motor and tailgate lock are on the right side.

RE: Questions an owner
Jimal,
Wiring in the tailgate hinges on 245s are notorious for breaking. The colored wires control just about everythingwipers, washers, defroster, etc. There also are two black wires, one on each hinge. Those are the ground wires. As long as one of them is intact, you're OK. If they're both bad, you have no ground and nothing will work.
There are two ways to fix any broken wires going to the rear wiper, etc. 1. Buy new wiring harnesses and thread them all the way through, which means removing the hinges and headliner (a bitch of a job). 2. Pull back the corner of the headliner near the wires, cut the wires and reroute them, bypassing the hinge. I did that recently on my 93 245, which had several broken wires. You can tape things up after rerouting and it doesn't look too bad. And it cost me nothing.
You are not going to be able to just fix a wire or two on either side and keep them in the hinge. they are too tightly together and will just break again if you try to solder them. If you have any broken wires, I recommend just rerouting them all and bypass the hinge.

RE: Questions an owner
Good to know. Well my wiper works, so I guess I have one good ground. I need to go out there with a test light or my DVOM to check the defroster grid. All I know is this one black wire is sticking out of the hinge by a good inch. Something to do this weekend I guess...

RE: Questions an owner
Broke out the test light today and I am getting power to the defroster grid. I'm not sure if this was always the case or the result of replacing all the fuses (some were corroded). I'll have to wait until the next time I need it, but the impression I was getting there are some breaks in the grid, or that broken wire completes the circuit. If I can pull down the headliner without damaging it I might try patching that wire. I know, I know, I'm a glutton for punishment.
As for the wiper delay, I ordered up a used replacement along with a replacement LF bumper strut. I'm taking care of little odds and ends until Spring.
