Default 740 vs 760 (4-cyl)

What is the difference between the 740 and the 760 4-cyl model? I found a 4-cyl 760GLE which I thought were all 6-cyl but this one is 4-cyl. The seller says the turbo needs rebuilding. Can I do this myself? The rebuilding kit is $60 on eBay. I found a place that does it for $350 but you have to send them the turbo then reinstall it. It it easy to remove/install or does it need tuning with special equipment after re-installing? This car seems to be a good deal apart from the turbo. It's one owner, less than 100k miles and under $1000.

the 760 turbos have the same engine and transmissions as the 740 turbos. later 760s have a totally different dashboard and dash wiring harness than the 740's, the fuse panel is moved, as is the relay panel. 760's tend to have more luxury stuff (power seats etc) which is optional on the 740s.

removing/reinstalling a turbo can be a pain as the exhaust side is usually completely rusted up, use lots and lots of kroil or whatever on the bolts before removing them. you need to disconnect the oil lines, the coolant lines, and then the air side and the exhaust side. there's also a couple vacuum lines.

I'd probably buy a rebuilt turbo from a reputable rebuilder, then send your old one back for a core refund.

Hard to believe that a turbo is bad with less than 100K! As far as DIY, Mitsubishi turbos are much easier than Garrett ones. I wouldn't touch the latter. You can tell by the shiny "band" in the middle, if it has one it's a mitsubishi, if not, Garrett... Later models are Mitsubishi, usually.

indeed, I'd have a mechanic look over this car to see if there's any OTHER problem, and 'turbo needs rebuilding' is seller misdirection. certainly, do a compression test, and a thorough visual inspection of all the other engine subsystem, hoses etc.

what year is this 760GLE ? Every one I've seen with the turbo-4 said "760 Turbo" on the back.
