Hi - new here, but a long time Volvo owner --- my '91 740 wagon went to my sister, then back to my family, and now is with my daughter at university. She just called today to say that it will not accelerate --- happened to her rather suddenly when trying to merge onto the interstate --- almost no acceleration. Trying to help her from afar.

I looked through the postings in this section of the forum, but couldn't find anything.

The wagon has a rebuilt engine (4 years ago --- sister blew the original). Regular maintenance, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance - if this has already been addressed somewhere else, could someone point me to that thread?

sounds like the same issue i had with my 91 740turbo. i had a blown head gasket. that might be your problem. try to check the compression. hope that helps.

 

Could also be a plugged catalytic converter. Just had to do mine in my E350 van, happened exactly as you discribed.

 

I had my 90 740T do this driving it home after buying itona long road trip. Turned out teh foam silening material on the inside of the aircleaner box was disintegrating, and clogged the wire mesh screen on the Airflow meter. Result, no air for engine.
It literally happened instantly, I pulled out to overtake a semi trailer, and it was like when teh Milennium Falcon wouldn't engage the hyperdrive..........

Might also be a bad Mass Flow sensor.

 

This is about what my 86 740 GLE non-turbo is doing but I just replaced the mass air flow sensor because it would not stay running. I posted a cry for help earlier for this problem and thought it might be a tranny problem since the trans was a quart low on fluid but found no leaks. I wish I could help. Changing the mass air sensor did not help the accelerate problem.
