740 won't start - no spark
Hi everyone - Tried starting my '86 740GLE a few mornings ago. The starter cranks fine. I checked the plugs and replaced them and realized I wasn't getting any spark. I then tried for a spark coming from the ignition coil. No spark. Checked resistance - 6,000ohms on the secondary windings (a little low). I decided to try replacing the coil. Got a new coil, put it in, still no spark. Wiring at the coil seems fine as I'm getting 12 V from the ends. Are there any other things I could be checking? Camshaft Position Sensor?? I don't even know where or what this is?

[align=left]Very good you suspect the camshaft position sensor. It's located on top of the transmission close to the engine. You access it from inside the engine compartment. It's a little hard to get to, you need a 10mm socket with extensions and a universal joint to get to it, but it's just one bolt holding it in. It lifts straight out the top once the bolt is out. Chances are great that it's your problem. Did you pull the trouble codes? You can find it cheap on eBay, or it's under $50 from Autozone.

Thanks for your replies!
I don't know if I have a hall or sensor in the dist... sorry I'm not so familiar with the sensors and other smaller components to the car
I didn't check the codes - don't have a code reader, however the check engine light isn't on.

Re: jsinton's reply
I tried looking for the CMP sensor, but I don't see it on top of the engine. I'm looking around where the trans connects to the engine block. Any further directions would be appreciated. Thanks
ps I'll post this as a new thread

It is not a cam sensor it is a crank sensor. Her is a pick it isn't the best but you should see it going straight down in with a single bolt holding it in.

If the ignition coil is fine, likely suspects are the Hall sensor (or RPM sensor) or the Power Stage. Visit www.stepbystepvolvo.com for a free diagnostic guide for 740 no-starts. (Could also be a wiring break leading to these.)
Here's an update on my situation -
I took fredbyte's advice and followed the diagnosis for no-starts in 740s. Great article btw. It appears that I have a defective hall sensor. I'm figuring I have to replace the whole distributor, but just thought I'd ask if anybody has been able to replace the sensor only. Thanks

You can replace only the sensor but it is a pain. If you do replace only the sensor also buy a seal kit for the Dist and install that at the same time.
