need help - parking gear problems
my car is a 1992 volvo 240, when I drove my car to school this morning I found that I could not put the my car into park and when I tried to put it into park there was a little bit of smoke comming out of the shifter smelled like burned silicon so I put it into neutral and used the e-break to park later when I got out of class I could still start my car, put it in reverse and into drive and get home. When I got home I was able to put my car into park like nothing was wrong but now when I go in reverse there is a wierd rythmic clicking sound that comes from the shifter and I can feel it shaking too
anyone have any ideas what this could be, any suggestions pls?
thank you

RE: need help - parking gear problems
Sounds like new transmission time. I would go to the local junkyard and see if I could find one there. If you can get one, then shop around and find a shop that's willing to put it in. Keep in mind that your whole car can probably be replaced for $1000.

Hold on! Don't replace that tranny just yet!!
First thing to look at is the neutral safety switch.

Next thing to look at is the tranny shift linkage.
There are two identical rubber/plastic bushings at the pivot points of the gear selector linkage. The rear one is easy. The front one is hard to access. May have to remove the shift rod.
