Lightbulb '79 242 2 pc. Driveshaft Issues

Hello everyone,
This is a great site. I've been learning so much I've decided to register and become a member.
Now down to business. I have owned my '79 242 for over half a decade now and, since I became the proud owner I have had one major issue plaguing it.

*The owner before me managed to break the drive shaft at the first u-joint mount. He had it welded back and I have had it rebalanced and installed a new carrier bearing and support since. She still vibrates badly which has caused all kinds of havoc to the transmission. I don't think I will ever find another drive shaft. None online for sale. However the junk yard down the road has half a dozen old 240's with single piece drive shafts. I looked under them the other day and noticed the mounts are very different. Does anyone have any thoughts on switching to a 1 piece they would share? Maybe different lengths or would the output shaft from the transmission be the same diameter as the 86-88sh.*

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

*If someone out there would sell me a two piece drive shaft. I would be very happy.*

I don't know where you are located but I know of a complete '80 242 GT barn find in northern Indiana. Hasn't been run in about ten years. PM me if you are interested.

note that manual vs automatic transmissions use different length drive shafts, ditto 4 speed vs 4+OD manuals (and I think BW vs AW automatics).

I don't know the difference between a BW and AW, but I do know I have an M46 trans 4+OD. Parts are being sourced to replace the seals and gaskets the drive shaft has vibrated loose. I plan on having the trans done this coming weekend but, I sure hate to waste my time just for it to happen again. *I'm holding my breath that ACT1292 has the drive shaft I have been looking for since day 1.*

early volvo automatics were BW55 or whatever, later ones are AW70/71. Borg-warner, and Aisin-Warner (Toyota's transmission factory which started as a borg-warner joint operation).

anyways, if you find a junkyard drive shafts, make sure they are off a 240 from ANY year with the M46 4+OD, and you should be good to go. There's a volvo parts dismantler in Rancho Cordoba, California (near Sacramento) who probably has these in stock.

I have sent them an e-mail hoping for the best, but only time will tell. If you can think of any other dismantlers I would appreicate any info.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but i have never seen any single piece driveshafts on a 240. i could be way off base because i have never seen the underside of a '79 buuuuuuut i think they are all 2 piece with the part that connects to the tranny actually being different from Manual or Auto. you should be able to source a drive shaft by finding a car that had the same transmission as yours...

If you find a donor car with a M46 Transmission, take the whole drive shaft. It should bolt right in place... That will be all she wrote.

Side note: the Windsor location pick-n-pull here in Northern CA has right now, several 240's with M46 transmission if you are near northern CA...

Hope this helps
