Default 240 Timing Belt question

Hia!
I have a 1992 240 wagon at 252k miles, my timing belt snapped on the highway last night. Mechanic tells me he can replace just the belt - but he says I really should replace the tensioner as well since its such a high mileage vehicle. Last time I had a timing belt replaced on a 240 they just did the belt, I am thinking it might be a case of a mechanic unfamiliar with the over designed indestructible 200 series volvo, but I would love some input.
Guy says the only kit he can get is $120 more than the belt which is painful.
I am 300 miles from home or I would just roll up my sleeves and do it myself

Thanks in advance!

the tensioner can go 2 belts, but many mechanics like to replace it every belt change for safety. at 300k, I bet you are due for a water pump too (they also can go 2-3 belts)

I just purchased a new pulley from IPD for $33. My 240 has 310K miles, and I don't think it's ever been replaced. It's just something that got overlooked,so it's getting replaced this week end.

heh. the serpentine belt tensioner for our 1994 mercedes E320 is like $400 discount price (and the $100 chinese ones are pure junk).

You don't have to change the tensioner. All it is is a bearing-if it's not making noise, it's OK. And it doesn't cost $120...
