'82 240 Squealing when I change gears
Hey all,
Haven't posted in a while but a new problem has arose. My 1982 240 Diesel Manual Transmission wagon has been squealing when I change gears. It happens when I push in the clutch - especially loud when I switch into reverse.
Does this mean I need a new clutch? Could it just be with the belts? All are new but one is missing - 2 mechanics said it was not a big deal, as it was a redundant belt.
Am going to sell the car soon (moving islands) and I don't want to pay much on the car before listing it. Great car, though - only 178,000 miles on a 30 year old car and when diesel is $4/gallon here, a car that can easily run on biodiesel or veggie oil can save bank!
Thanks for any help or suggestions. Found a good mechanic out here, but Volvos are not his specialty - especially older diesels...

Assuming the noise is clutch dependent, i.e. sitting still, transmission in neutral and pressing the clutch down causes the noise and it stops when you let off on the pedal, then 99% it is your throw out bearing. The transmission has to be removed to replace it...it slides on the transmission's input shaft and is held by the clutch fork. Labor-wise, it's a 3 to 4 hour job for a shop. The bearing is roughly $30-40.
