'82 244 Potential Swap
Before we start, I live in Australia so if we could take that into consideration.
I'm looking at a potential engine swap for the old girl.
Was thinking maybe swapping it out for a later model turbo engine from another Volvo, maybe early 2000's donor car.
But im worred about aftermarket parts availability.
How difficult it is to find some performance parts for those later engines?
What would be the best bang for your buck turbo engine from the 2000's?
If not a Volvo engine, what else would be a good option? Not looking for crazy numbers, just something a little quicker.
Already thought about the Barra/LS swaps, but those engines are getting pricey these days too. (But are a good option considering all the aftermarket performance parts that are available)
Thanks in advance.

just about every volvo newer than the 960/S90 has a transverse engine and are primarily FWD, although some are AWD... adopting that to a RWD only platform with a longitudinal engine will be challenging.
the 960/S90 has a complex expensive-to-maintain all alloy 2.9L DOHC I6. which is a 6 cylinder version of the inline 5 used on the 850/S60/V70 families.
the only drop in transplant would be a 940 turbo, and that would of course still require replacing nearly everything under the hood along with the ECU/ICU under the dash.. you'd need the fuel pumps for LH2.4 turbo as the fuel pressure and flow rate is a fair bit different than a K-Jet system like your 82 probably has... the 940 intercooler probably won't fit on the early 240 radiator, etc.

Volvo did offer a 240 turbo from 1981-1985. (in the US, don't know about AUS) Later cars the intercooler was standard. It used a much higher pressure fuel system we called CIS, (constant injection system) with pressures up to 90 psi - but used the same body and mounting points. Newer engines might not clear the huge 240 subframe, and 960 transmissions are hard to come by - at least in my part of the woods. If you wanted to make it complex use the t-6 engine from a xc90 (2003-2007?), with it's twin turbos and can bus electrical system, with a 960 transmission. 300hp easily!
there are companies that offer kits to put ford v-8s in, that might be easy and fun!

yeah, long time recently missing member swiftjustice44 had a long thread on his 740 powered by a small block ford that was quite upgraded, the car was *FAST* and handled great. he pointed out that the SBF has *tons* of performance addons available at all price points. he initially had it all lowered on 18" or whatever wheels, but alter backed off and went for milder suspension and 15 or 16" wheels for a better ride, said it still hooked up and handled great. I believe he was using a ford 5 or 6 speed stick shift, too.
I can't find the thread, and it looks like he's not been on here since 2017
