I get them from a junkyard and I routinely swap the driver's seat covers/cushions for the passenger's on all my 940s. I put 940 seats in the 740s.

Do factory seats use hog rings? Seems like if you bought seat covers and used hog rings it would weaken the fabric if you punched a hole in them for the rings?

Yes, hog rings are used but never right thru the leather/fabric--there's metal rods that are sewn at the edges and the hog rings grab onto the rods.
Just do it! Get a seat, take it apart and it will be apparent. Just get some long nosed pliers and hog ring pliers, and hopefully you have strong hands.

Just a quick follow up question. If I go after market and use hog rings wouldn't I have to sew in the rods that the rings connect to?

I don't do aftermarket, I prefer used OEM, so I don't know how they come... I have seen enough atrocities to stay away from that! You can probably buy a good used cover/cushion if you look around.

re: hog rings, I put IPD's velour fabric seat covers on our 240 ages ago, and used hog rings, they've held up really well, the rings haven't torn or anything. I used fairly small hog rings, like 1/2" or something? I did use a proper hog ring plier to install them, this is just a few $ tool.

I may go that route if I can't find just the seat cushion, since even for torn seats Pick n Pull wants $50/seat. And if I want a total replacement there's a yard that specializes in Saabs and Volvos and they have a set, in perfect condition, with the same interior code(color) for $150/each. It's nice to have a lot of options.

Is pick and pull your pull a part? I have never come accross a volvo with all the seats rip free or panels that werent cracked. The 1994 940 they got at our pull a part i think actually had cloth seats and im willing to spend big money to get them.

I wish i had a list of models featuring cloth and an interchange guide with it.

Just curious, how much did they want for the cloth seats? We're they power?

any 740 or 940 could have cloth or leather, and all 740 and 940 seats are basically interchangable, although you may need to fiddle with the electric connections.

Hello,
I live in Michigan and purchased a 97 960 4 door sedan with a perfect body and low miles on the 2.9L engine.

However the beige seats are very worn. I think they used the wrong cleaner on them and over time the leather started to wear away.

I need to find a source for used OEM seat covers and if you live in an area where they exists, I'd pay someone to ship me a whole set of seat covers-- front and back-- which I would install upon arrival.

There's just nothing here except Michigan junk and few 960s or even 740s to find.

I would prefer OEM used, since the dealer says they are NLA.

BUT-- if I had to use aftermarket, I would, just to have some good matching seats that comnplement the trim. In a couple spots the trim is wrinkling, but I bet that can be fixed easily.

Any comments on my ideas?

I have spent my life making and fixing diesels, especially DD and MB so I am not foreign to the quality.

After seeing that Volvo made the choice to put the VW 2.4l diesel in their cars, I went with gas. It's too hard to find a Volvo 80s diesel, which would be easy to work on.

Thanks for reading this, all comments welcome.

by most accounts the VW I6 diesel is awful. Diesels just aren't very popular in sweden, too far north, too cold.

Funny how folks don't realize that these ancient diesels polute like 1000 times more than a modern car--they are even banned in Germany without major modifications.

Removing seat skins is a good amount of work. Buying the seats, skinning them, who wants to bother? One can buy a 960 for peanuts in most markets--unloved cars...
