Default 86 740 turbo compatability, oil or h20 cooled

Hi everyone. This is my 1st post and have some basic ? concerening a 86 740 turbo that Iam am rebuilding: I bought a reman turbo via the internet that is oil cooled only. The Garrett turbo on it now is both oil and h2o cooled. Can I omit the coolant lines and use this oil only new turbo, or do I have to swap the cooling housing over to the new unit also? I see they make conversion kits swapping a non h2o turbo for a h2o/oil cooled one. The turbo on it now is blowing oil and whining. Car is an auto w/159k new t-belt and rebuilt suspension/struts, brakes. All comments are welcome, and thanks!

You could bypass the coolant lines but the h2o cools better.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I kind of thought that already. Is there a way to swap the housings once I get the old unit off, or will I need all new seals once they have been taken apart. Also, would syn oil keep the temps from getting too critical? And finally, what happens when the turbo unit overhaeats? The seals go out again or....? Car is used for a daily driver and will never be abused. Thanks again, Tech!

Synthetic might keep it a little cooler.

Haven't taken apart to many turbo's to try to swap.

Look at them next to each other and see if it can be easy to swap.

If the turbo overheats to bad the bearings will wear out fast.

Thanks again Tech. The car was my father-in-laws. He told me they replcaed the turbo after they bought it 2nd owner via the dealer years ago. I wonder if they were all converted from oil to oil and coolant-cooled housings. ? is, if this turbo I got, an oil only cooled unit, were there Volvos that used this application. Or, are they, 240's and 740's of this era that still use an oil only turbo, still being used. Anyone have one of these units and how many mi. do you have or did have before you converted? I bought this unit via ebay w/o checking or asking if was the exact same unit. My fault; only paid 200$ for it.

There is some out there that is only oil cooled. It would be an early 740.

Most have converted to the oil and coolant cooled turbo's.
