I just bought an 87 240 DL, and I love the car. When I bought it, the guy I bought from said it sputters from time to time, but he couldn't figure out what it was.

The car didn't do for the first week but now it does when I ever I pull out into traffic between 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears; the car is a five speed standard.

The sputtering feels like the car is going into an epileptic seizure, and I can smell gas. It really scares the crap out of me. Also, every once in awhile, the car will stall out, but then it starts right back up.

If anyone has an ideas please let me because as I stated above I love this car, and I really want it to run right.

 

I am not an expert but have owned Volvo's since 96. I suggent possible problem might be the Air Mass Flow Meter sensor or the ECU. Check with the previous owner and ask him if he ever had to replace either. If he said no then ask him if you can talk to the previous owner to him and ask them the very same question. I am in the search for a ECU part number 0280000572. I put in a 0280000561 that works for the time being but I smell gas stall in traffic and burn a small amount of black smoke out the tail pipe. I believe it is contributed to the different ECU that I put in. The fuel circuitry within the ECU is mapped out differently and that is why I am having the problems I am having. Find out what Air mass meter and ECU is required for you vehicle and verify the part numbers against the original manufactures part numbers. I think you might have a substitude part they my fit form fit but not function. The other problem is you may have a defective part one or the other of the above parts. Let me know how things work out.
