'88 240 Engine Pull Advice
HI, I found an ok-looking 240 auto in the local salvage yard, and I can get the engine for $230. I would like to get it, never worked on a Volvo, but I'm looking for a 240 now. Can anyone advise what tools I need, and the basics or tricks that will help? The yard will let me use a hoist and I am handy with cars in general, I just want to go in as prepared as possible. and I will be alone (no help). Thanks a bunch!

Full Metric 6 point socket set. Preferably 1/2 inch drive. You'll need up 10mm to 20 or 22mm I believe to get the bolts holding the engine and transmission together.
Set of metric box ends 8mm to 19mm would be good
Several screwdrivers - both phillips and regular
Might need a torx screwdriver as well if it is a later model
Jack & Jack stands
Hoist & chains
Vice grips are always handy
Pliers
Wire cutters
Flashlight
Hack saw or some power tool to cut metal (you never know)
I'm sure there is more but I can't think of at the moment. Are you planning on pulling the engine & transmission together? If not, you will need a socket u-joint to access some of the bolts that hold the engine and tranney together.

OK, thanks. Seems logical and straightforward.
Do not intend to get the transmission, but might if it would be faster/easier. Would cost more $$ obviously. It will come out together?
Car is showing about 125000 miles, don't know why it was "retired" but it has a state inspection from a couple years ago.
Thanks!

Actually, you'd need very few tools... But better to have too many on hand than too few. At the JY when one is not under pressure to save the patient, one can take liberties... I'd pull the whole drivetrain, engine and trans together, then separate them--much easier. Also, make sure the motor is good... 240s are notoriously bad on odometers so don't believe the 125K shown. An "OK looking" car got junked for something such as a wreck, motor or tranny, so if it's not wrecked, my bet is on the motor having issues... Best to get motor from a wrecked car.
