Default 88 240DL - No Spark, No Fuel

So I was driving my 240 the other day and it felt somewhat sluggish. Next day I went to Walmart and on the way home it dies and I am not able to restart. I drug it home and started trying to diagnose the problem.

I suspected fuel, so I pulled the fuel line and cranked the car, but only a dribble of fuel came out... so 1.) some kind of fuel problem I then tried starter fluid with not so much as a cough of life from the car...

Then I checked spark and I am not getting any spark and the coil is not getting any power with the key in the on position....

Before I start throwing parts at this thing I though I would ask if there is like a master relay or something similar?

I have checked all the fuses, 7 was blown but I replaced it and still no go...

The car cranks, so the starter is getting power...

Any help is appreciated...

The path from the battery to the coil is shown in the attched picture. I would inspect these wires and wiggle the key in the ignition switch.

With the fuel, if you haven't already, check the fuel pump relay. That always goes. The easiest way to check is to pop off the casing, and plug it back in. When you switch it to "on" both switches should engage. If not, it's probably burnt out.

http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/FuelSystem.html this site is excellent, really 24 karat gold excellent for diagnosis. NOTE: the site is for 700s and 900s so some things will be different, but mostly minor things.

As for ignition, check the inline fuse. I am not sure on where it's supposed to be mounted because mine isn't, but if you follow the small red wire mounted on the positive terminal of the battery, you'll find it. On mine (89) it's a 25 amp blade fuse.

Also, check the ignition switch. If you have a haynes manual it describes the test or
http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900F...ition%20System this again, will walk you through some of it.

That's where I'd start. Treat them as unrelated at first, just rule out some common problems, if neither of those, then I am past my knowledge base.

Good luck

So I started diagnosing the problem. When I turn on the ignition the fuel relay activates, but when I turn it to "start" the second relay doesn't activate. Does his mean a bad halls sensor?

Forget about anything relay/fuel related at the moment. The fuel ECU won't enable the pump relay until you have spark ... its a built-in safety feature.

the coil is not getting any power with the key in the on position
This is the problem. With the key you should see battery voltage on both primary connections of the coil.

Ok so I found a loose wire and have power to the coil, but I am still not getting any spark. The EM2 portion of the fuel pump relay is not activating which I understand indicated a bad halls sensor... which would also keep the ignition system from firing... reasonable?

I would make sure the timing belt is OK by seeing if the rotor is turning.

Ding Ding Ding... we have a winner. The belt was bad... The guy I bought the car from said he had done a recent timing belt... it was old as hell he must have used an old timing belt....
