Default 89 240 issues

I have an 89 240 and is having some issues. Ive solved my no start issues with a new fuel pump relay. Now she will be driving just fine and all of a sudden start to spit, sputter and make a popping noise which im thinking is backfiring through the intake. This also goes with LOP for a few minutes and then she will run fine again. Im thing a crank position sensor or possibly the ignition module. Any ideas?

BTW this is my first Volvo (Im a vw guy) and its a love/hate relationship so far

CPS problems are almost always complete dead engine. when the CPS fails, there's no spark, no injection.

LOP ?

Loss Of Power. Yea in a bit lost when it comes to gassers. I'm a diesel guy. Diesel mechanic by trade and diesel vehicles. And obd1 virgin. I'm at a loss at what would randomly cause this issue. I'm almost sure the popping is backfire through the intake. When it happens it runs like the timing is off for say 1/4 mile or so without being able to go over 5-10mph. But then it will run fine after

the ignition timing is from holes drilled into the flywheel on LH 2.4, there's little to no way it can be off, unless the distributor is twisted like 90 degrees off from where it should be.

if the timing belt slips, the valve timing can be off, but that will result in steady state wrongness, not intermittent.
