Default 89' 245 noisy rear end

Hi Folks, I have had my 245 about 3 years now and its been great, fixed a ton of the "things that fail" for the 245 and quite happy with it.
However while driving recently I noticed a rarh rarh rarh kind of sound from the rear of the car. Most pronounced on a level road after letting off the gas, changes with speed also.
First thought was rear axle bearing, had experience with that in the old days, but after I watched a few videos on YT I thought that it might be a "U" joint.
My wife drove it while I sat in the back seat to listen and I could not isolate it to either the left (which I thought first) nor the right, sounded like it was in the middle.
Few tests, loudest when coasting, not so bad when under load. Hitting the brakes quiets it down quite a bit. Turning to right also quiets it down, that is when I thought wheel bearing. But left may quiet it down also.
I put it up on jacks and turned the left wheel and it was kind of growly or rumbly. Thought wheel bearing! Yeah! But went to the other wheel and turned it and it sounded mostly the same. RATS! Then thought differential. BIGGER RATS!
Anyone dealt with this problem before and have suggestions? I havent pulled the rear end plug to check fluid yet as the jack is in the way, Ill check it tomorrow or the weekend if I can get to it.

Thanks yall!
