Default 91 240 cylinder on firewall

I was wondering what that black cylinder is on the passenger side right up on the firewall. I looked over the entire Haynes manual and found nothing about it. It's connected to a flat round piece that has four wires attached to it. Anybody have an idea of what it could be? I have seen it on almost all 240s. I'm just curious.... I am trying to learn the purpose of every item under the hood so I know where to look if I have an issue to diagnose.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. It actually isn't the coil. As a matter of fact I just replaced the coil with a performance one recently.... The coil is actually located on the opposite side under the engine compartment (driver side).

Could this be part of the cruise control system?

Bingo! wojeepster wins. It is, in fact, the windshield wiper motor.
