ok, thats undoubtably the resistor, the 5 position bypasses the resistor.
the resistor is mounted on the outside of the plastic hosuign the fan is inside of, its accessible if you remove the passenger side kick panel under the dash and the glove box.
(oops, I had the wrong resistor linked here, the one I originally posted was for a 240)
the 740 uses volvo PN 6848756 (which superceded 3522215)... the couple dealer sites I checked said NLA, but here's one on fleabay...
