'91 volvo 740 turbo. doesn't want to run on rainy days?
i have a '91 740 turbo. the problem i am having is this:
on a rainy day, i may drive my car for a while, then, it will start to putter and miss real bad. when this happens, if i step on the gas, the engine will die out (but only when in gear. i can rev the engine as high as i want in park. but will putter and miss still). i literally have to let the car run on idle power to get it to move when it does this. normally, once this happens, i can turn the car off for half an hour and come back to it and the problem will be gone.
at first, i thought that driving it around in the rain let something get wet. or perhaps something was getting too hot. but check this out. lately, it will do the same thing when i come out and start it up in the morning! it will putter and miss and not want to go anywhere. now i know that nothing has gotten too hot, and nothing has gotten wet because the car had been in my driveway all night. but, once again, this is only on mornings when it has rained overnight. so rain seems to be the direct trigger for this malfunction. perhaps condensation. but what part of the vehicle is it affecting to do this.
i hope this is a problem someone here has tackled before and can help me out with this.

well, i finally found the problem. you wouldn't believe how simple the problem was, it was right in my face! my hood seal is allowing water to drip in directly on the (coincidentally) side mounted distributor directly below the seal.
what a great design.[>:]
anyways, i thied replacing the seal with another from the junkyard, but the ones i tend to find are in worse shape than the one i have. does anyone know of a distributor cover, or another fix for this problem?

ha! That's funny, I was just about to type "sounds like a distributor cap issue." Are you sure the seal is good or there isn't a crack in the cap? It should be sealed. A little water coming in from the hood seal shouldn't affect it that much....unless you've got niagra falls coming under the hood.
