Unless you know the service history,
Be aware that the crankcase pressure can and will blow the rear engine main oil seal out, that requires pulling the tranny to change it. So maintaining the breathing system is important.

I would change the oil trap, flame trap, air filter , clean throttle body and bellows hose from air filter.
Clean or replace all the hoses connecting the breather system.

Install a new seal in the oil filler cap.
Order an intake manifold gasket and throttle body gasket at the same time, its so much simpler to pull the manifold back out of the way to do the oil trap and whilst in there you might want to change the engine coolant sensor. Should cost around $100 in parts from FCP Groton.
Heres the FAQ,

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-90...ion_A_Treatise

Then I would get after the timing belt unless you know when it was changed.

Exactly where is the PCV valve ?, mine doesn't have one.

Thanks I will not drive until thats done. I will take some pictures as I do this work. Started prep for paint. It does look as if there is oil around the rear seal.

I've read that fixing the breathing system will often cure a leaking rear main oil seal, if it doesn't theres a really good article complete with photos online, definately do-able.

Rear main seal article,

The guys on the brickboard say the returns aren't worth the expense with performance mufflers.
If you want power throw a V8 in there.
Plenty of them do that. but...why I dunno.

I was going to do away with cat and run straight to muffler. The old system is blowing out crap. Had a S10 with 500 ponies to much fuel. Just looking for economy now.

I disagree with that comment (not with you personally). I have a stock 90 745T, and put a 2.5" catback exhaust on it, with a single light truck muffler in the front muffler position. With no other mods I've probably taken a full second or moreoff my 0-100 km/h time, and picked up a fair whack of midrange torque, you know, useable torque. It will think about breaking the tyres loose on teh 1-2 change at full throttle now.
It's a great thing to do and worth the money in every respect, it's far from loud either.

Regards, Andrew.

They were talking about the sport system sold by IPD, it has an annoying drone at cruise speeds.

Ahh, I see. It amazes me that manufacturers spend time developing bolt in exhaust systems, and allow things like that to happen. A slightly different muffler would fix it.
That's the main reason I use light truck mufflers, large internal passages, but plenty of packing, so if you can fit them under your car (no problems with a 740), they're the way to go, and cost much less than a mirror polished fart can.

Regards, Andrew.
