Just got car, Black Smoke out of tail pipe kinda goes away when it warms up. Is itrunning too rich and oil wants to blow by oil filler cap on valve cover after short drive down the street. Any ideas it has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor could PCV valve do this ? 135K Automatic
Unless you know the service history,
Be aware that the crankcase pressure can and will blow the rear engine main oil seal out, that requires pulling the tranny to change it. So maintaining the breathing system is important.
I would change the oil trap, flame trap, air filter , clean throttle body and bellows hose from air filter.
Clean or replace all the hoses connecting the breather system.
Install a new seal in the oil filler cap.
Order an intake manifold gasket and throttle body gasket at the same time, its so much simpler to pull the manifold back out of the way to do the oil trap and whilst in there you might want to change the engine coolant sensor. Should cost around $100 in parts from FCP Groton.
Heres the FAQ,

Then I would get after the timing belt unless you know when it was changed.
Exactly where is the PCV valve ?, mine doesn't have one.

Thanks I will not drive until thats done. I will take some pictures as I do this work. Started prep for paint. It does look as if there is oil around the rear seal.

I've read that fixing the breathing system will often cure a leaking rear main oil seal, if it doesn't theres a really good article complete with photos online, definately do-able.

The guys on the brickboard say the returns aren't worth the expense with performance mufflers.
If you want power throw a V8 in there.
Plenty of them do that. but...why I dunno.

It's a great thing to do and worth the money in every respect, it's far from loud either.

They were talking about the sport system sold by IPD, it has an annoying drone at cruise speeds.

That's the main reason I use light truck mufflers, large internal passages, but plenty of packing, so if you can fit them under your car (no problems with a 740), they're the way to go, and cost much less than a mirror polished fart can.
Regards, Andrew.
Got car painted needs wet sanding and buff. Did the repairs on engine it had stopped smoking now it has started again changed plugs rotor andcap. What next O2 sensor orcat? Check engine lite on again. Got to be something simple... Hate to buy a book but
