Default '92 240 wagon-- fixing a dead power window

Hi, I'll post my disclaimer first: I am pretty unschooled as far as DIY stuff goes, but want to get better.

I have a prime candidate for a DIY fix: the '92 240 wagon I just bought has a rt frt passenger window that's not working.
Since all the others work, I guess it's either a switch or a motor.

What's the best way to narrow it down, and a good place for the parts besides a local junkyard?
Any good tutorials out there?

Also:
If I want to tweak performance in a 240 without breaking the bank, what are some relatively inexpensive things I can do to increase HP and handling?

Thanks for enduring a newbie,
Fig

If it doesn't work from both switches most likey a bad motor or wiring. If it was the switch it would work from one of the switches.
Unlikely both switches are bad but still possible.

Remove the door panel and check for power at the motor.

To remove the door panel: Start by unscrewing the door lock button. Then remove the caps in the side of the armrest. Then remove the 2 phillips screws in the armrest.Take the arm rest and tilt and turn towards the from of the car slightly pulling on it.You should feel it come out. Then remove the clips holding the door pocket on and slide the door pocket up and off. Then remove the 2 phillips screw left after the door pocket is off. Then I think you have to remove the trim around the inside door handle(But not sure) Then carefully pull the door panel away from the door it might be a little hard. You need to get the clips out of the door(hopefully still in the panel. Then slide the panel up and off.

For the power think check out http://www.ipdusa.com/

There isn't all that much for the 240 but there is a couple of things.

You're right, tech-- it's non-functional from both switches.
Thanks a TON for the how-to remove the door panel!

I'll check wiring and ohm out the motor and see if I need one.
anyone have advice on the best (as in price is good and parts are functional) place for a new/used power window motor?

I have a '92 passenger car. Just had the driver's door apart yesterday. Here's a link with a very nice tutorial:

http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/quickindex.html

Scroll down to "General" and click on "Electric Window Maintenance". There's a tutorial on how to get both front and rear doors apart. There are three screws that hold the armrest on the '92. Two behind the apholstery plugs and one in the very front of the armrest below the handle. Remove the speaker as well. Don't forget which speaker wire goes where or the speakers will be out of phase and the radio will sound a little odd. This site also has other tutorials for the 240 and 740. Another Volvo fan.

Good luck!

Mark
