Sounds like you have a bad ground. Pull the switch out and make sure it is grounding out on the chassis.

I own 3 volvos.

i have 3 kids in collage and taking this 740 to the dealer would kill me

I'd be in there with an ohm meter, checking the switch itself for open/closed, then checking the other end of the wiring harness for the same.

ah, found a 1991 740 wiring diagram online.... the page "Fig. 7: Comb Sw, Wiper/Washer Sw, Courtesy Sw (Grids 24-27)" pretty far into the file http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~ridgely/V..._740__1991.pdf shows the door switches, courtesy lights, door lights, etc.

I have a door switch that works (it opens and closes) and the wires are all continuous, but it doesn't make the light come on. I'm regularly pretty good with a multimeter, but I am clueless why it doesn't work. I'll be interested to see what you find out.

referring to the color codes on that diagram I linked, here's what I'd do... first at the dome light, confirm there's power on green-red to brown (brown is ground). if not, check fuse 5. does the light work with its local switch?

ok, here's the tricky part... that blank white box in the diagram for the courtesy lights? thats the delay timing module, if its out, odds are it will be sketchy and hard to figure.

anyways. the black wire at the dome light should be switched to ground when any door except the drivers is opened. this turns the dome light on if the dome light switch is in the right position. per that diagram for a 740, the drivers door grounds the white-black wire which goes to the delay module. so if your dome light works with the doors, except teh drivers door, odds are, its that delay module. I have no idea if that can be repaired, probably need to replace the dome light.

now, if the dome light works but its the door courtesy lights you're talking about, thats different. they also are all on fuse 5. at each door, the green-red wire should be +12V. the white-black wire at the door harness connector goes to the black or white-black wire on the door switch. if you can pull the door switch out far enough to get to its wiring (I dunno if this is feasible), the black or brown-black or white-black wires on the door switch should have voltage when the switch is NOT pressed (this is voltage from fuse 5, through the door light to the switch. when you press the switch, it should connect this to ground, and the light should come on.

interesting. on these cars, if this diagram is correct, each door courtesy light is seperate. on my 850, any door turns them all on (but since the doors are closed, only an astronomer at a dark site will notice this, hahaha).
