'92 745 Speedometer repair.... troubles.
I did the capacitor change-out on my speedo but still have problems. It had started throwing a check engine light for "no speedo signal". That's when I decided to do the capacitor fix so I could get it inspected without a CEL. Went pretty well until I damaged the superfine watch spring on the speedo needle post. I bumped it and kind of mangled it. I went ahead and did the caps and when all finished, the check engine light is gone but the speedo is sitting on 70, jumping around, going to zero and working what looks like properly only for a moment. It has registered 2.4 miles in 5 days of driving. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of that fine spring is? Or, is that not it at all and I need to revisit the solder joints like maybe between circuit board layers? One of the caps leaked all around the IC legs of one of the chips. I cleaned with deoxit cleaner and a toothbrush. Anyone know if this continued jumping around could be damage caused from the leaky cap or could that tiny watch spring be causing this type of action? I know this is a reach asking about this kind of detail but maybe someone else has been there... Thanks, C.

Update...
I drove the car yesterday and the speedo was working about 90% of the time at ~40 mph and below. Once above ~40, it would go to zero. It never went up to 70 like when I first tried it. Makes me want to go in one more time and at least deoxit the main connector and reseat and maybe reflow the solder joints I did. I now think that mangling that spring didn't do much harm. The speed was looking good from 0-40... Thanks, C.
