Bang Bang When Shifting Gears
My daughter has a 2008 S60 FWD (T2.5) with 104K miles and for the last few months it makes a loud bang sound when shifting either to reverse or drive from parking or neutral. I replaced all 4 engine and transmission mounts but the sound did not go away. Both ball joints and wheel bearings are good. I don't see any leak or physical damage (by observing) when I checked the CV shaft's boots but I notice the drive shafts have more play than normal (when I rotated the wheels back and forth). Is there any trick to identify if a CV shaft is bad? I would greatly appreciate if anyone point me to a right direction to troubleshoot this bang-bang problem.
Regards,
Regards,
CV joints usually make noises (whining) or can clunk when the wheel is turned fully or when loading or off loading the torque. I think the fact you noticed some play is a good clue....
I took the car to local dealer for their opinion ($49.95). They found both CV axles and hubs are good. According to them, to fix the problem, both axels need to remove at the hub and apply metal adhesive to stop the noise - their price tag is $320. Since I know how to remove the CV axels, I want to fix it to save my daughter some money. Did anyone use a metal adhesive to fix the axels/hubs noise?
Dealer must use a special adhesive so that it can cure fast to operate the vehicle in a couple hours. I would appreciate for information about what type of metal adhesive and where to apply it. I don't want to apply to a wrong place and later on I can't remove the shaft from the hub.
Note: Dealer said, there is safe to drive the vehicle, just noisy when shifting from D-R or R-D.
Thanks,

After did some research, here is what I found to fix the problem:
1. Remove axle from hub
2. Clean splines
3. Apply metal adhesive (Loctite 660) to splines
4. Reinstall axle
5. Let cure for 6 hours
