Default '92 940 Turbo; Speedo yes, odometer/trip counter no

I have a '92 940 Turbo. when you first turn the key on the speedometer needle jumps then settles back to zero (don't recall if it did this all the time and just noticing it now since I'm watching the odometer). The speedometer seems to work fine when driving, but the odometer and trip counter don't work/advance...once in a while it will advance for about 10 miles then stop again. Where does the speedometer receive its signal from and does it also feed the odometer/trip counter or is this operation mechanical within the instrument? Thanks ahead of time for any responses!

sounds like the dreaded stripped gear inside the odometer to me.

appreciate the quick response! Is the part available and something that can be changed? It wouldn't be the first time I've pulled an instrument panel...not what I call a joy in life!

The resistors in the speedo are dying... '91-92s are super prone to this. The brickboard.com has a good writeup on the repair and it's not easy. I have never done it--I get used ones.
