I have a 1993 940 turbo. When it is cold, it starts fine and runs fine but once i start driving it around, especially on a hot day, it will not restart. The newest episode, it started to sputter and then would not crank or start. After a few hours and the engine completely cools down. It will restart and drive around fine like nothing happened.

I have recently changed the belts, spark plugs, wires, rotor and cap, oil change, and the fuel pump is about 3 yrs old.

Any help please. Can't have the wife getting stranded all the time, since we live in hot weather all the time.

Have you checked to make sure the connections at the battery and starter are clean and tight ??

 

I have. battery terminals are clean and tight. Starter has been changed probably like three times in the last 6 yrs.

Its the same every time. Hot day, engine hot and then no cranking or even an attempt crank until engine has cooled.

 

3 starters in 6 years? Hmm, something electrical gets overheated and causes issues. Crankshaft Pos. Sensor, Power stage, coil, fuel pump?

 

if it won't crank, then its a issue with the starter circuit, or the starter solenoid itself. If it cranks strongly but doesn't start, then you start looking at other stuff like what lev said, CPS, ignition power stage, etc.

Odd you say you've put 3 starters on it in 6 years, we're original owners of an 87, its still got its original starter, and I've never changed the starter on any of my other high mileage volvos either. Did you use A) real Volvo brand starter, B) OEM Bosch starter, or C) brand X from bigbox auto chain ?


the starter control circuit goes from the ignition key "S" pin ('start') to the park/neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission, then to the starter itself. next time it won't start, put your foot on the brake and put it in "N" (Neutral) and see if will crank over. if ir cranks in N but not in P, then odds are your park/neutral switch is conking out, and its just showing up when its hot.

 

Prolonged cranking will kill a starter. If the car doesn't start immediately when cranking then something is wrong. All of these red blocks that I have owned start after just a few seconds of cranking.
