btw, the reason the relay under the hood that powers the injectors (and on some cars, the ignition coil), is called the "radio suppression relay" is as follows...
on 240's, the main fuel injection/pump relay was over behind the glovebox, the fuel injection half of this relay powered the whole FI system, including the injectors. on the early 740, they consolidated all the relays in the central panel (on 240s, they were shotgunned all over the place). When they moved the fuel injection relay directly under the radio .... the high current pulses that power the fuel injectors made static, especially over the AM band.
so, they added a relay under the hood to move the fuel injector power away from the radio, hence the name, 'radio suppression' ...

Yes lev. I have just ordered the relay and new radiator reservoir from Pelican Parts. They will be with a friend in LA awaiting trans-shipping along with some other American goodies. Avery Dennison stone chip film, boot stretcher hopefully for unwearable Eyetalian m/cycle boots, Dremel maybe, pex pipe crimper hopefully. As the TV ad here for Mainland Cheese goes, "Good things take time you know."

I have given up on the extras. Infernal girl at the footwear place a total **** and completely curbed my enthusiasm for American shopping sprees. Happy to do a relay for cheese deal any time.. but I think I might be on the winning end of that one. On the other hand you might too.. we don't dose our cows with recombinant bovine growth hormone :-) http://www.mainland.co.nz/

re: the relays. unsnap and remove the plastic bezel around the cigar lighter, and there's 1 or 2 small phillips screws exposed, remove those, and the tray with the cigar lighter comes out, for easier access to the relays. I'd avoid moving the whole relay/fuse box assembly if possible, no point in disturbing 20 yr old wiring any more than absolutely necessary ![Wink](https://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)

pierce thanks for this. I have attached a photo. I take it the little "square" bezel is the one I have indicated. When you say unsnap should I coax it forward or put a knife beside it to prise it out?

Just pull that little "lighter" plate straight out, be brave--it just unsnaps. There should be two Phillips screws behind it. Take them out and this will release the left side of the utility tray/lighter base. The right side has a couple of small tabs that hold the tray attached to the side, so the left side has to come out first. Unplug the wires to the lighter and the courtesy mini bulb which is probably burned out, and take out the whole assembly. The Relay Tray will then be accessible.

Just a note to say thanks to all and pierce especially. My new relay eventually arrived and the installation was a snap. Indeed I am cautiously hopeful I have diagnosed the problem correctly. The old relay had burned contacts and so far there have been no more problems.. wipes brow.
I may have to start another thread on this but while the parts were removed awaiting reassembly my cigarette lighter went walkabout. In case I go secondhand for a replacement can anyone tell me what other Volvos share this part? In case I go new does it have a part number? My searches have drawn a blank. With thanks again.

well, according to my parts catalog, a 1994 940T lighter has two pieces, '****' 1258269 and 'glow filament' 662108. at www.volvopartswebstore, the glow thing is $14 (and fits 93-97 850s' as well as 92+ 960s), and the **** *was* $3.42 but is NLA (no longer available... this **** seems to be any 940 or early 960 specific)...
so, I suggest you scrounge a lighter from from any 940, its exactly the same as what you lost.
