Default 940 lumpy steering

My 1997 940 had slightly lumpy steering, every half turn, when I got it in 2007, I suppose it improved and/or I got used to it, it had been unused for a while. Recently I used it very little for 5 weeks, when I did I found the steering worse, it has hard spots at dead centre and every half turn of the wheel. Changed the fluid. Jacked up the front, tried it with no engine, just the same, flooded the column bearings and UJ with WD 40, not much better. The front suspension strut tops are rotating with the front wheels. So, is it the UJ or struts...or something else?

well, if its every 1/2 turn of the wheel, then it pretty much has got to be in the steering column, something is binding, or the U joint is bad.

btw, where are you that you have a 1997 940? they stopped selling 940's in the US after model year 1995.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm in the UK, you've mentioned this before:

This car is a complete wreck to look at, but once gave a ride to Neil Armstrong. I got it at 114k, now on 185k.
