940 Mystery wiring harness

was ripping apart the trunk liner to clean out everything (surprise, it was filthy) and noticed this random wiring harness, investigated further and found it went under the spare tire and led to nowhere

any ideas what it might be?

when i found it, the plug was off as shown

 

Looks to be aftermarket sound system wiring amps or something maybe.

Tow, trailer hitch wiring.

 

both of those are possible because it has an aftermarket pioneer deck, and also used to have a trailer hitch, my guess is that it probably was for a trailer because it doesnt have any aftermarket speakers

also the length of it would seem like it would reach a trailer, thanks for the help

 

almost certainly a trailer hitch 4-pin, which is for small trailers with just lights, no brakes or trailer-side batteries.

the other end is probably something like...

 

fyi, white is ground, brown is tail/running lights, green is right turn and brake, yellow is left turn and brake (for brakes, both yellow and green are actuated at once). the Amazon link above is for a typical converter module that goes from the separate turn and brake lights the Volvo has to the 4-wire system, and also takes the trailer light power off a separate power wire from the battery to that module.
