Default 940CD mystery cut out

Can anyone help? My 96 2300CD has developed a strange habit of just cutting out for no apparent reason whilst driving along. No warning lights on dash until clutch depressed when alll lights come on. Once the car has stopped for about 10 seconds it usually restarts as normal, occaisionally it needs a few extra tuns of the starter motor get it going again. Took it to my local service station who checked the OBD but could find no fault codes, they suggested that perhaps the problem lay with the flywheel position sensor. I removed this and cleaned it up and things got better for a while so I purchased a new one to make sure, sods law the problem has returned and now seems more frequent.

what is a 96 2300cd? The symptoms sound like fuel pump relay. Locate it on your car and when fault happens flick fuel pump relay several times with thumb and forefinger. If car now starts you might want to replace relay.

Thanks Wojeepster,

For clarity 96 2300cd is A 1996 940CD estate(stationwagon) The engine is the B230FK derivative with 8valves and high pressure turbo.

I have just had a quick look in my Haynes manual which is fairly unhelpful as to which relay is which in the central electrical unit, looking at the wiring diagram it seems to be no135 LH-2.2 and LH 2-4 relay.

Anyone any idea if i'm right and and where the relay is located?

In my 740 it is behind the ashtray second row big white relay by drivers knee.

On my 240 it is above right side footwell under the carpet, same big white relay. If you get a volvo wiring diagram from volvo technical publications it will show you a picture with each and every relay called out.

Just a quick note to say thank you.

Took out the white relay cleaned contacts and problem seemed to go away. Have replaced relay with a new one to make sure, nearly a week on and all seems well.

Once again many thanks, this was my first visit to a web forum and I have been impressed by the response I received..

P. S. just for a laugh the back box developed leak today!!!!

regards
