Default 940 engine cut out

My 940 station wagon (1993, non turbo, 163000) has lost engine power (like turning off the key) at random road locations in the no. va. area over the last 10-12 months. Requires a minute or two to start again, engine cranks but seems fuel starved or maybe no spark? Very frustrating and now my wife won't drive it anymore! Have had an ignition job with volvo parts and a new starter key switch installed. Have been reading all the "cutting off" postings but maybe someone has had exactly the same experience with a 940.

Thanks for the response. I found a posting on www.volvo-forums.com by SykO
Matt in Yateley, UK who says the problem is with the "ignition amplifier" chip made by Bosch located on non-turbo cars behind the air box on the side of the washer bottle. he says the chip/amplifier gets "iffy" around 150k miles. It's attached to a heat sink in turn attached to the grounded car body. He says on the back of the chip is a metal plate with white paste thermal bond for heat transfer. Heat degrades compound over long time period. I'm checking this out now and will discuss with my volvo mech. Go to www.volvo-forums.com/t20041-shut-off-problem.htm for the posting.
regards, herb

Default rpm sender ??

Thanks for your reply. I called a part guy I know, he suggested the flywheel rpm sensor. I will try to change it, I ordered one today. Seems reasonable, maybe the car will think motor is stopped and when it refuses to start, that it isnt rotation. Next is air mass meter. Or a thip to the locl dealer. Yesterday it suddenly stopped while my wife drove it, power steering is gone in a snap, scaring for her. Afterwards the lambda warning light is on permanently, will this give anyone a hint of what is wrong ?? Oh I forgot there is 225000 miles on it. No oil consumption so far, no problems with automatic. Main drive shaft is worn now, will have be rebuild when i get the time, with now joints and center bearing.
